MAEVE’S HEAD POUNDED as she cracked open her eyes. She was in her bed, propped up on several pillows. Elyne sat on the end of her oversized bed while Seamus stood over her.

“She’s awake,” he said.

“Thank goodness. Mother, how are you feeling?”

“What happened? Does the palace still stand? How many dead? What about the Elves?”

“Calm.” Seamus put a hand on her shoulder and pressed her into the pillows. “You hit your head quite hard on the stone floor.”

Remembering, she touched the back of her head, sickened by the large lump there. Seamus had already mended her, thank goodness. Her head was still tender and she had a raging headache but at least she wasn’t dead.

“We were worried about you,” Elyne said.

“Aside from a tremendous headache, I’m fine.”

“I suspect you’ll have that for a few days. I’ll get you something for it.”

“No, no.” Maeve waved it away. “No more herbs, Seamus. I’m all right.”

“Are you certain, your majesty?”

“Aye, I am. I need a clear head. Not muddied with more of your potions. I seem to have to thank you once again for saving my life.”

“’Tis becoming a habit,” Seamus said with a nod. “A habit I’m starting to dislike.”

“Me as well.”

“I’ll be back later to check on you.” He patted her shoulder and left her alone with Elyne.

“Tell me what happened,” Maeve demanded once the healer was gone.

“Morrigan and the red dragon attacked the palace,” Elyne said. “She’s awakened the red dragon. If it hadn’t been for Nero, I’m not sure what would have happened. I didn’t realize he had followed you from the Hill of Tara.”

“Aye, he did. His protection is his way of thanking me for releasing him from the dark spell he was under with the Unseelie.”

“He told me,” she said. “He also told me he...wants you to go to the Sacred Forest.”

“Did he? I’d intended to speak to the High Council about that today after the negotiations.”

“You intend to go then?”

“I think for the safety of all here, I should.”

“No, Mother.” Elyne moved to sit beside her on the bed. She gripped her hand. “It’s too dangerous. No Fae has stepped in the Sacred Forest in thousands of years.”

“I’m well aware of that, daughter. However, under the circumstances, I believe it may be for the best.”

“You sound like you’ve already made up your mind.”

“Did King Urdithane and Prince Andahar survive the attack?” Maeve asked, changing the subject.

“They did. They’re uninjured. I used the banish spell, like you told me. I was able to send away the red dragon and Morrigan. For now. I fear she will return, though.”

“Aye, she will. That’s why I have to leave this place.”

“The palace sustained a lot of damage,” Elyne said, carefully ignoring Maeve’s last statement.

“Which sets us back once again.” Maeve sighed. She closed her eyes and leaned her head back into the pillows. Her head throbbed. “We will have to begin rebuilding all over again.”

“Mother, don’t worry about any of that. I’ll take care of it.”

“I know you will. Send me Henry, daughter.
